Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance FAQ

You may have heard of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance but not know exactly what it is or why it might be valuable for chemical engineers. These questions offer more information.

What is AD&D insurance?

AD&D insurance offers benefits in the event an accident that causes death or bodily dismemberment, including loss of specific senses such as sight, speech or hearing.

Why is AD&D a popular choice?

Cost. Since benefits are limited to accidents, premium costs are lower compared to other types of life or disability insurance. That makes this an option that can fit into most household budgets.

Who is eligible for AD&D coverage?

AIChE-sponsored AD&D insurance is available to members and their spouses under age 70, as well as any unmarried, dependent children under age 19 (or age 26 if they attend school full-time), subject to state variations.

Who receives the insurance benefit?

Money from any qualifying claim goes directly to you or to your beneficiary – not to a doctor or hospital. Benefits are paid regardless of any other insurance coverage you may have.

Is my health considered for approval?

No medical testing or exam is required for AIChE AD&D insurance and there are no health questions required to enroll. Your acceptance is guaranteed.

Are there any additional benefits?

Yes, certain features make this insurance do more for you and your family, depending on the nature of an accident. While some of these benefits are paid only in the event of loss of life, this is when your family may need extra money the most.

Rehabilitation Benefit: To help return to productivity following a covered accident, an additional benefit may be payable for approved rehabilitation training expenses.

Education Benefit: This additional protection can increase and extend benefits to qualifying insured children to help them financially through the death of their insured parent while full-time students in an institution of higher learning.

Day Care Benefit: This benefit can be payable after death due to a covered loss if the insured has dependent children enrolled in a day care program at the time of the loss.

Common Carrier Benefit: This added benefit is payable if loss happens while traveling in a

qualifying public or commercial form of transportation such as a plane, train, bus, taxi, etc.

Seat Belt & Air Bag Benefits: Safe behavior is rewarded if death occurs because of injuries sustained in a qualifying accident while properly wearing a seat belt and/or in a seat protected by a properly functioning airbag system.

To help you better protect your family’s financial future, AIChE AD&D insurance available to you at member-exclusive rates. For example, $100,000 coverage costs $4 a month. Choose an amount up to $500,000 to be paid to your loved ones if they were to lose you to a covered accident. Guaranteed approval – no health questions or medical exams needed to enroll.
